Embracing the Green: Kep Province’s Commitment to Combat Desertification and Drought
Kep Province — In the lush expanse of Kep Province, Cambodia’s smallest yet one of its most verdant regions, a significant environmental campaign unfolded throughout June. This initiative was in observance of Desertification and Drought Day, aiming to fortify the province’s rich tropical forests, which boast an array of hills, mangroves, islands, and caves.
At the helm of this green movement is Mr. In Sao, the Director of the Department of Environment in Kep Province. His dedication to reforestation is evident in his commitment to planting trees across the region. This noble cause has garnered the support of Don Bosco Kep, a school that prides itself as an active participant in the Don Bosco Green Alliance.
The Royal Government of Cambodia, aligning with the United Nations’ resolutions on environmental protection, has designated June 5th as National Environment Day. This serves as a reflection of humanity’s collective pledge to safeguard Mother Nature. “To heighten awareness about the necessity of environmental conservation, we’ve launched several campaigns within our region. These include cycling events through the National Park, initiatives to reduce plastic use, and artistic competitions in schools, among others,” Mr. In Sao remarked during the event, addressing a gathering of over a thousand youths and provincial officials.
His Excellency Som Piseth, Governor of Kep Province, delivered an inspiring speech under the sweltering sun to nearly a thousand students, predominantly from Don Bosco Technical School, which included indigenous youth from the Jarai, Kreng, and Tampung ethnic groups. He emphasized the global significance of local environmental efforts, stating, “Our actions to protect the environment are not solely for our benefit but contribute to a worldwide network where all of humanity must partake to preserve the only planet we have.”
The Governor challenged the youth, asking, “How many trees do you wish to plant this year?” He urged all residents, institutions, and official departments to initiate tree-planting campaigns, especially within schools and along roadways, reminding everyone of the manifold benefits trees provide, such as oxygen, shade, fruits, flowers, and overall health.
Don Bosco Kep, in solidarity with the Don Bosco Green Alliance, Laudato si, the Asian School of Wisdom, and the Brother Sun movement, has pledged to plant 5,000 trees this year. The school encourages each student and teacher to plant at least ten trees in their home gardens or villages. With a community of over 500 individuals, the goal of planting 5,000 trees is well within reach. This initiative has received commendations and support from both Mr. In Sao and H.E. Som Piseth, who have lauded such activities for bolstering environmental consciousness and fulfilling our shared duty to cherish and enhance our Mother Earth.
Fr. Ly Samnang Albeiro Rodas, rector of Don Bosco Kep, graced the ceremony adorned with his traditional Amazonic collar, symbolizing blessings for the Mother Jungle. He invoked the Holy Spirit and the ancestors to bestow their blessings upon the forests and natural environments of this picturesque region of Cambodia, stretching from rolling hills to serene islands and mystical caves.
